Brace yourself for October 19th as the Oppo R9s is set to be released to the general public and it will further improve on its predecessor – R9.

It all started in 2014 with the release of R5, R7 in 2015 of  and subsequently R9 in March 2016. Here’s what the R9 was back then:

  • 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 1920 pixels or ~401 ppi pixel density
  • Metal body
  • MediaTek's Helio P10 chipset, Octa-core 1.95 GHz processor, 4GB RAM
  • 16MP primary camera
  • 16MP secondary camera
  • 32GB internal storage + 128GB microSD slot
  • Android Lollipop 5.1
  • Non-removable Li-Po 3700 mAh battery
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • March 2016 release date
  • $499 USD price tag

As you can see, there’s an upgrade going on here which makes the R9 a viable upgrade for existing users – as well as to entice newcomers onboard. Large 5.5-inch Full HD screen, fast octa-core processor, 4GB RAM, an amazing 16MP-16MP camera combination, large 32GB internal storage with an expansion slot as well as a whopping 3700 mAh battery makes the package complete.

The only disappointing thing is that it is still running on Android Lollipop 5.1, instead of the latest Marshmallow 6.0. Oppo has a serious reputation of releasing very slow updates to their devices, even for those in the flagship category.

So what’s in store for us from the R9s then?

  • 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 1920 pixels or ~401 ppi pixel density
  • Metal body
  • Upgraded Qualcomm MSM8953 Snapdragon 625, Octa-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Adreno 506 graphics and 4GB RAM
  • 16MP primary camera with f/2.0 aperture, phase detection autofocus, LED flash
  • 16MP secondary camera with f/2.0 aperture
  • Bigger 64GB internal storage + microSD slot up to 256GB maximum
  • Updated Android Marshmallow 6.0
  • Smaller non-removable Li-Po 3010 mAh battery with Fast battery charging
  • Dual-sim and 4G LTE
  • October 2016 release date
  • Expected $449 USD price tag

You can safely say that the R9s is an upgrade that previous owners have been looking for. With the R9, it seems to get stuck on Lollipop OS with no plans to get an update.

A couple of refinements were made with the R9s. It now sports an upgraded hardware, more internal storage, and its OS updated to Marshmallow 6.0. Plus, its expected launch price is slightly lower this time around. Its only drawback is that it now has a smaller capacity battery – although it comes with fast battery charging.

Conclusion:

So what do you think of the upgrades that Oppo R9s provides? If you already own the R9, then it is the right time to get yourself this smartphone. For others, you might want to look at other devices which has better hardware and is cheaper as well.

Oppo R9s is expected to be released on October 19th for an estimated price of $449 USD. It will be available in Gold and Rose Gold colour.
