Oppo R5: world’s thinnest smartphone at just 4.85mm

If previously Oppo R3 wore the crown for the world’s thinnest smartphone at 6.3mm, now the mantle has passed on to the R5 at 4.85mm, which is just incredible.

Being the thinnest is already an amazing feat but having the finesse to boot is another matter altogether. Oppo doesn’t skim on the specs at all, plus it looks beautiful and stylish at the same time.

Packed in a body of 148.9 x 74.5 x 4.9 mm (5.86 x 2.93 x 0.19 in) and weighing in at 155 g (5.47 oz), it is amazing how everything can fit into this ultra-thin body. Plus it features a reinforced industrial grade stainless steel micro-arc frame that gives the premium look and feel to it. It is not only for aesthetics purpose, but the phase-shifting material is made of metal, resin and other composite materials. When heat is generated, the material begins to change. This material not only absorbs any heat; it also radically improves thermal efficiency.

The Oppo R5 will be sporting a 5.2-inch Full HD AMOLED capacitive touchscreen displaying 1080 x 1920 pixels or ~423 ppi pixel density which makes for great images and you should enjoy playing games, watching movies or reading e-Books on it. Plus there’s also Gorilla Glass 3 for extra protection.

Powering up the R5 will be the Qualcomm MSM8939 Snapdragon 615 chipset, an Octa-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 processor, Adreno 405 GPU and 2GB RAM. This would make the performance at the upper range of the market that can run everything that you throw at it without any issues.

Camera-wise, there’s a 13 Megapixel primary camera with 4128 x 3096 pixels, autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, panorama and HDR. Plus there’s the 5 Megapixel secondary camera for your selfie needs.

The smartphone will be running on Color OS 2.0 which is based on Android KitKat 4.4.2. The update to the latest Android L 5.0 might come a little bit later because of the customized OS.

It will come with just 16GB of internal storage but the downside is that it doesn’t have an expansion slot which means you are stuck with the limited storage and only have cloud storage for your future expansion needs.

A rather small non-removable Li-Po 2000 mAh battery is supplying juice to it, which might not be the best option; but my bet is that it has to be with the ultra slim design that can’t accept a much higher and bigger battery. The good thing is that a five minute charge gives you two hours of phone call while 30 minutes charge will restore 75% of the R5’s battery.

Having the bragging rights of the world’s thinnest smartphone is very exciting plus it has all the necessary specs that befit a flagship. The premium look and feel makes it even more exciting. But the only downside is the 16GB of storage with no expansion slot.

The Oppo R5 is expected to be released in December for approximately $499 USD and will be available in silver and gold.
