Dr. Anjali Acharya is a Senior Environmental Specialist in the World Bank’s East Asia and Pacific Region. Based in Singapore, she is leading the East Asia Regional Marine Debris initiative, as well as several country programs on marine plastics. Over the last 5 years, she has led complex multisectoral projects at the landscape and delta-level in Vietnam and Cambodia. Over her 23 years at the World Bank, she has worked on a range of environmental issues including pollution management, climate resilience, water resources management, environmental health, biodiversity, and environmental policies. She has experience leading and working on investment and policy lending projects, and analytical studies in the Africa, East and South Asia, and Latin America and Caribbean regions. An Indian national, Dr. Acharya holds a Ph.D. degree in International Environmental Health from Johns Hopkins University and a Master’s degree in Environmental Economics from Duke University.

Professor Ba Shusong is a fellow of experts who receive the State Council’s special allowance. He was awarded by China's Social Science Assessment in 2017 as the Chinese scholar with the highest citation frequency in Chinese literature on economics from 2006 to 2015. Professor Ba had participated in a large number of seminars and forums held by policy-makers in the financial fields as a financial specialist, and lectured to members of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee in China as the main speaker. He had held management positions in a wide range of financial institutions including commercial banks, securities companies, public funds and trust companies. As an expert who is familiar with the actual practice of China's financial operations and policy-making process as well as well versed in financial theory research, he possesses rich practical experience and research achievements. Professor Ba received the Global Youth Leader Award from the World Economic Forum in 2009.

Burkhard Balz has served on the Bundesbank’s Executive Board since September 2018 and is responsible for Directorates General Payments and Settlement Systems, Economic Education and International Central Bank Dialogue.

From 2009 up until joining the Deutsche Bundesbank, the law graduate and trained bank clerk was a Member of the European Parliament, where he sat on the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and served as the financial policy spokesman of the European People’s Party (EPP) between 2014 and 2018. In his role as rapporteur, Mr Balz presented reports on, inter alia, Latvia’s accession to the euro area, the Solvency II Directive and regulations pertaining to the European Supervisory Authorities. Between 2014 and 2018, he was a member of the EPP Group Bureau. He was also a member of the ASEAN delegation of the European Parliament. Mr Balz was Chair of the European Parliamentary Financial Services Forum from 2014 to 2018 and also chaired the EP – Hong Kong Friendship Group.

Prior to his membership of the European Parliament, Mr Balz held various positions at Commerzbank AG in Hanover, where he most recently headed the department for institutional clients.

Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee is the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics recipient along with his wife, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer, He was educated at the University of Calcutta, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Harvard University, where he received his Ph.D in 1988. He is currently the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2003 he founded the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), along with Esther Duflo and Sendhil Mul¬lainathan, and he remains one of the lab’s directors.

Abhijit Banerjee is a past president of the Bureau for the Research in the Economic Analysis of Development, a Research Associate of the NBER, a CEPR research fellow, International Research Fellow of the Kiel Institute, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society, and has been a Guggenheim Fellow and an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow and a winner of the Infosys prize.

He is the author of a large number of articles and four books, including Poor Economics, which won the Goldman Sachs Busi¬ness Book of the Year. Abhijit’s newest book, co-authored with Esther Duflo, titled Good Economics for Hard Times, is on how economics can help us solve social and political problems of our day. He is the editor of three more books and has directed two documentary films. He also served on the U.N. Secretary- General’s High-level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

Mr. Ronnie C. Chan is Chairman of Hang Lung Group Limited and its subsidiary Hang Lung Properties Limited, both publicly listed in Hong Kong. Founded in Hong Kong in 1960, the Group expanded into mainland China in 1992, developing, owning and managing world-class commercial complexes in key tier one and tier two cities.

Mr. Chan co-founded Morningside, an international investment group established in 1986 with venture capital and private equity investments in manufacturing, TMT, and biotechnology. In 1996, he co-founded the Morningside Center of Mathematics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and helped establish the triennial International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians where Morningside Medals of Mathematics are awarded. In 1997, he helped found the North America based Morningside Music Bridge for young classical musicians.

Mr. Chan is active in many other non-profit and educational organizations. Mr. Chan is Chairman of the Executive Committee of The Better Hong Kong Foundation. He founded and chairs the China Heritage Fund, is a co-founding Director of The Forbidden City Cultural Heritage Conservation Foundation in Beijing, and is former Vice President and former Advisor of the China Development Research Foundation in Beijing. He is founding Chairman of the Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society, and founding Chairman Emeritus of Asia Business Council. He is also former Chairman of the Hong Kong-United States Business Council, and former Chairman of the Executive Committee of One Country Two Systems Research Institute. Mr. Chan is Chairman Emeritus of Asia Society and Chairman of its Hong Kong Center, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the National Committee on United States-China Relations, and Committee of 100.

Raymund was born and raised in Hong Kong and began his professional career in Toronto, Canada in 1984 after graduation. He then returned to Hong Kong in 1993 and was admitted to the Partnership in 1995. He was appointed to the China firm’s Management Board in 2002 and in 2003, he relocated to Beijing and became PwC’s China Assurance Leader in 2005. From 2011 to 2015, he also became PwC’s Assurance Leader for the Asia Pacific region. Raymund returned to Hong Kong in 2014 and was elected Chairman & CEO for the PwC China firm in 2015. In 2017, he also became PwC’s Asia Pacific Chairman.

During his 35 years of professional experience, Raymund has provided assurance and business advisory services to both private and public enterprises in Hong Kong as well as state-owned and private enterprises in mainland China. He has been involved in a number of onshore and offshore initial public offerings, debt financing, corporate restructuring, and mergers and acquisition transactions covering the finance, manufacturing, retailing, media and entertainment, technology and energy sectors.

Raymund had previously served as an Expert Adviser to the relevant authority responsible for the Power Industry reform in China. He had also served as the first SEC Expert Witness on China cross border regulatory inspection issues in Washington. Raymund is a frequent speaker at financial and business forums covering various emerging business and economic issues.

Raymund is a firm believer in actively working to make a positive impact on society. This includes PwC’s leadership in corporate responsibility, as well as the contribution of technical support, management advice and assurance services to organisations in the non-profit sector. Raymund is a co-founder and sponsor of the Quan Yuan Orphanage for disabled children.

    Mr Lai joined Tencent in 2009 and was the general manager for Tenpay between 2012 and 2019. In 2015, Tencent’s payment business was accelerated and developed into Tencent FiT (Financial Technology). Since then, Mr Lai has been leading Tencent FiT until 2019.

    During the time when Mr Lai headed up the Tenpay and Tencent FiT business, he and the team have made contributions of strategic significance in setting up the Group’s payment infrastructure and in creating an open financial ecosystem. In 2014, Mr Lai and his team launched WeChat Red Packet and QQ Red Packet, which had gained huge popularity across China. This enabled Tencent to tap into the fast payment market and provided a solid foundation for gaining a competitive edge in mobile payment. In 2014, Mr Lai and his team also launched the wealth management platform Licaitong, which currently has a total fund holding of over RMB 800 billion (as of first half of 2019). Consequently, with payment services as an entry point, Tencent has succeeded in establishing a financial ecosystem that covers such diversified fields as wealth management, securities, banking, and blockchain. This has positioned Tencent as the leader in the FinTech sector.

    In May 2019, under Mr Lai’s leadership, Fusion Bank Limited, a joint venture initiated by Tencent, was granted a virtual banking license by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority. In June 2019, as Tencent’s vice president, Mr Lai was appointed as the Chairman of Fusion Bank.

    Mrs Carrie Lam joined the Administrative Service of the Hong Kong Government in August 1980 and rose to the rank of Administrative Officer Staff Grade A1 in September 2006. She became a Principal Official on July 1, 2007 when she was appointed Secretary for Development. She was appointed Chief Secretary for Administration on July 1, 2012.

    Before assuming the post of the Chief Executive, Mrs Lam had served the public for more than 36 years in 20 public service positions including Director of Social Welfare, Permanent Secretary for Housing, Planning and Lands (Planning and Lands), Director-General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London, Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Secretary for Development and Chief Secretary for Administration.

    Mrs Lam was elected as the Fifth-Term Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on March 26, 2017, and was officially appointed to this position by the Central People’s Government on March 31, 2017 to assume office on July 1, 2017.

    Mr Lancaster joined CLP in 1992 and has held a wide range of managerial positions within the company. His experience covers project management, power plant operations, commercial, finance, legal and corporate functions.

    Besides serving in various subsidiary companies of the CLP Group as Director, Mr Lancaster is the Chairman of the Business Environment Council and a founding member of the Advisory Council of The Australian Chamber of Commerce Hong Kong & Macau. He is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Management Association and a council member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and a member of its Climate and Energy Cluster Board. He is also chairman of the Hong Kong Membership Committee of the UN-accredited World Energy Council.

    Mr Lau joined the Hong Kong Government as an Administrative Officer (AO) in 1979 and was promoted through the ranks to AO Staff Grade C in April 1988. He joined the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) in April 1993 and was the Head and Executive Director of various divisions of the HKMA until 2004.

    In July 2004, Mr Lau was seconded to the Hong Kong Mortgage Corporation as Chief Executive Officer until he retired in December 2012. Mr Lau was appointed Under Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury in January 2014.

    Mr Lau holds a Bachelor of Mathematics (Computer Science and Statistics) Honours Degree and a Master of Mathematics Degree in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, Canada.

    Currently Ehud is the Managing Partner of Canaan Partners Israel, an Israeli venture capital fund, and a Venture Partner with Lenovo Capital heading its investment opportunities in Israel. Ehud is also an active angel investor operating as a partner with a leading invest ent team, Kaedan Capital.

    Prior to these activities, Ehud was a Managing Partner at Vertex VC for seven years. Among other successful investments, Ehud identified Waze as a bright star from the start, leading the first investment round in the company and serving on its board of directors until its acquisition by Google for over $1 Billion.

    Previously, Ehud co-founded and served as Chairman and CEO of Ki-Bi Mobile Technologies, a mass-market device specialist for mobile content distribution. He led the business from concept to commercial success, an IPO in London and eventual acquisition.

    Earlier, he served as COO and CFO of Telegate, a telecommunications company, where he was responsible for a restructuring plan leading to the acquisition of the company for over US$400 million. Prior to Telegate, Ehud was a private equity investor and investment banker in New York and Tel Aviv, serving on the boards of directors of several technology companies.

    Mr Laurence Li, SC is the Chairman of the Financial Services Development Council (FSDC). The FSDC is an advisory body to the HKSAR Government on all matters relating to the development of Hong Kong as an international financial centre. It engages the industry in formulating proposals to promote the further development of the financial services industry of Hong Kong and to map out the strategic direction for the development.

    Mr Li’s profession is as a practicing barrister. He focuses on banking, commercial, company, and securities law. Prior to being called to the Hong Kong Bar, he served in several positions within the Securities and Futures Commission in Hong Kong and, before that, worked in a law firm in New York.

    Mr Li is a Judge of the International Court and Regulatory Tribunal in Doha, Qatar.     Dr Ruth A. Shapiro is the Founder and Chief Executive of the Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society (CAPS). CAPS is a research and advisory non-profit organization based in Hong Kong and working throughout Asia. CAPS is committed to producing world-class, evidence-based research to help philanthropists, governments and social delivery organizations maximize the positive impact of private social investment.

    Dr Shapiro is the primary author of Pragmatic Philanthropy: Asian Charity Explained, published by Palgrave Macmillan in January 2018. She is the editor of The Real Problem Solvers, a book about social entrepreneurship in America. She also co-authored the book, Building Energy Efficiency: Why Green Buildings are Key to Asia’s Future. She has published articles in the Nikkei Economic Review, the South China Morning Post and Philanthropy Impact and is a regular speaker on issues related to private social investment in Asia.

    Dr Shapiro founded the Asia Business Council and served as its Executive Director since its inception in 1997 until May 2007. She spent the early part of her professional career in the field of international development. Within this field, she held management positions and built new program areas at the Academy for Educational Development, the Harvard Institute of International Development and Global Outlook. She holds a doctorate from Stanford University and Master’s Degrees from Harvard University and George Washington University. She completed her undergraduate work at the University of Michigan.

    In 1997, he graduated from the Czuczor Gergely Benedictine Gymnasium in Győr, after which in 2002 he received a degree in Foreign Affairs from the Budapest University of Economic Sciences and Public Administration.

    He has been a Member of Parliament for Fidesz since 2002, and in 2018 began his fifth term in Parliament.

    From 2006 to 2010 he was Fidesz Communications Director, the Prime Minister’s Spokesperson from 2010 to 2012, and was Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations at the Prime Minister’s Office from 2012 to 2014.

    In June 2014 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and since 23 September 2014 has served as Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

    He is a Roman Catholic and is married with two sons. He was a registered futsal player, stepping onto the field for two 1st division and eighty-five 2nd division games between 2011 and 2016.

    Bill is a career banker with significant frontline global banking experience and a proven track record of leadership and financial success. He has extensive experience of working in emerging markets and a proven record in spotting and nurturing talent.

    Career

    Bill began his career with JP Morgan, where he went on to become one of its top five most senior executives and later co-chief executive officer at the investment bank from 2004 until he stepped down in 2009. Bill was invited to be a committee member of the Independent Commission on Banking, established in 2010, to recommend ways to improve competition and financial stability in banking. Subsequently, he served as an advisor to the Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards and was asked by the Court of the Bank of England to complete an independent review of the bank’s liquidity operations. In 2011, Bill founded Renshaw Bay, an alternative asset management firm, where he was chairman and CEO. He stepped down on appointment to the Standard Chartered PLC Board. Bill was previously a non-executive director of Pension Insurance Corporation plc and RIT Capital Partners plc. He received a CBE in 2013.

    Dr. Janet L. Yellen is a Distinguished Fellow in Residence at the Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy at the Brookings Institution. From February 2014 to February 2018, under the Obama and Trump Administrations, she served as chair of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, making history as the first woman to be appointed to that position.

    Prior to her four-year term as chair, Dr. Yellen served as vice chair of the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors and, from 2004 to 2010, as president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.

    While serving as a member of the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors (1994–1997), Dr. Yellen was appointed by President Bill Clinton as chair of the Council of Economic Advisers. From 1997 to 1999, she also chaired the Economic Policy Committee of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Earlier in her career, she served as an economist with the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors.

    Dr. Yellen enjoyed an accomplished career in academia as an assistant professor at Harvard University (1971–1976) and a lecturer at the London School of Economics and Political Science (1978–1980). In 1980, she joined the faculty of the University of California at Berkeley, where she was named the Eugene E. and Catherine M. Trefethen Professor of Business and Professor of Economics. Currently, she is a professor emeritus at the Haas School of Business.

    A Keynesian economist, Dr. Yellen has written on a wide variety of issues in macroeconomics and labor economics. She is a member of both the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She has served as president of the Western Economic Association International, vice president of the American Economic Association and a fellow of the Yale Corporation.

    She is the recipient of the Wilbur Cross Medal from Yale, the Adam Smith Award from the National Association for Business Economics and the Paul H. Douglas Award for Ethics in Government from the University of Illinois Institute of Government & Public Affairs. She has also received honorary doctorate degrees from Brown University, Bard College, the London School of Economics and Political Science, NYU, the University of Warwick and Yale. In 2014, she was named by Forbes as the second most powerful woman in the world, and in 2015, Bloomberg Markets ranked Dr. Yellen first on their annual list of the 50 most influential economists and policymakers.

    Born in Brooklyn in 1946, Dr. Yellen was her high school valedictorian. She graduated summa cum laude from Brown University with a degree in economics in 1967. Dr. Yellen went on to receive her Ph.D. in economics from Yale University in 1971—the only woman among that doctoral class. She wrote her dissertation under the supervision of Nobel laureates James Tobin and Joseph Stiglitz.

    Dr. Yellen is married to Nobel Prize-winning economist George Akerlof. Their son, Robert, is also an economist.
