Policy Dialogue - Global Outlook and Opportunities for 2020

The outlook for 2020 is ridden with uncertainties. The slowdown of global growth is expected to persist for some time, while a variety of risks - including unsustainable corporate debt levels, volatile capital flows and disrupted supply chains due to geopolitical tensions - also weigh on prospects. This presents potential financial stability issues as financial institutions are already challenged by the "lower for longer" interest rate environment and new players such as BigTech firms. Against this backdrop, financial institutions may need to explore innovative ways to remain profitable and competitive. These include making use of emerging technologies, and considering alternative markets, including sustainable finance. Speakers in this session will share their thoughts and insights on the global outlook, including how policy makers can support the economy and financial institutions in this context.

Keynote Luncheon

Sponsored by:

Central bank independence has always been tested by political pressures. In the US, the pressures have recently risen with President Trump’s repeated criticism on the Federal Reserve Board’s monetary policy. In a recent Wall Street Journal article, four former heads of the Fed, including Dr Janet Yellen, have expressed their views on independent monetary policy. It is believed that an economy functions the best when the central bank can act independently of short-term political pressures and rely solely on economic principles and data. In this session, Dr Janet Yellen will share her perspectives on the policy framework of central banks as well as insights on the implementation of monetary policy.

Panel Discussion on "Evolution of Global Trade and Supply Chain Finance"

Protectionism is on the rise, trade wars are being fought, and the rules-based multilateral trading system is under threat. These geopolitical uncertainties have the potential to reshape supply chains, creating new challenges to which corporates must respond. And we are moving to a new era in the evolution of supply chains, in which value creation increasingly reflects the full financial, social and environmental impacts of a business. In this session, financial and business leaders will consider the implications for supply chain finance and the role it must play for the benefits of trade to be widely shared. Emerging trends will be debated with a focus on the technologies and partnerships required to drive inclusive solutions which support SMEs, sustainability, and emerging markets.

Breakfast Panel on “Hong Kong’s Changing Role as an Investment Gateway: New Trend, New Generation and New Strategy”

Sponsored by:

Hong Kong has long been a leading capital formation centre and investment gateway for companies and investors from Mainland China, Asia and the rest of the world. Building on the well-established financial infrastructure and international network, asset owners and managers operating out of Hong Kong invest for both the public and private sectors, with asset under management reaching approximately US$3 trillion as of end-2018.

Meanwhile, a new perspective on investments has been emerging, partly because the new generations see the world and wealth accumulation differently comparing to baby boomers and Generation X. At the same time, the rise of advanced technologies has been transforming the investment landscape, consumer preferences and the overall business environment. These developments explain why such trends as ESG and impact investing, big data analytics, as well as robo-advisory, are drawing much attention from the investment community.

Amidst these trends, what are some new strategies that investors are considering? Are there any implications for Hong Kong’s role as an investment gateway for Mainland china, Asia and the world? What have the Hong Kong SAR Government and industry participants done in anticipation of the changes ahead? These issues will be discussed at our panel constituted by senior representatives from the Hong Kong SAR Government, a global professional services provider, and a leading Internet-based platform company.

Fintech and Digital Currency: Financial Innovation in Greater Bay Area

Sponsored by:

Technology-driven financial innovation makes inclusive finance possible and brings forth new business models by improving efficiency and reducing costs, but it also raises regulatory concerns. Among the emerging technologies, digital currency is closely watched by many, and its development will profoundly affect the social structures of future societies. Hence, discussions about fintech-related key topics are particularly important. These key topics include the impacts of fintech in the monetary policy transmission mechanism, regulation of large new financial platforms, as well as the relationship between the public and private sector. As a key financial hub, the industrially advantageous Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area can adopt and actively promote fintech innovation to advance the development of the whole financial sector.

As China's biggest financial media group, the Yicai Media Group will invite representatives and experts from government, companies and research institutions to the workshop. Through panel discussion and experience sharing by the guest speakers, the workshop will focus on the developments of FinTech and the Greater Bay Area and discuss the future of financial innovation and digital currency.
